چکیده

The problem of equivariant rigidity is the Γ-homeomorphism classification of Γ-actions on manifolds with compact quotient and with contractible fixed sets for all finite subgroups of Γ. In other words, this is the classification of cocompact EfinΓ-manifolds. We use surgery theory, algebraic K-theory, and the Farrell–Jones Conjecture to give this classification for a family of groups which satisfy the property that the normalizers of nontrivial finite subgroups are themselves finite. More generally, we study cocompact proper actions of these groups on contractible manifolds and prove that the Efin condition is always satisfied.

When Are Two Coxeter Orbifolds Diffeomorphic?

One can define what it means for a compact manifold with corners to be a “contractible manifold with contractible faces.” Two combinatorially equivalent, contractible manifolds with contractible faces are diffeomorphic if and only if their 4-dimensional faces are diffeomorphic. It follows that two simple convex polytopes are combinatorially equivalent if and only if they are diffeomorphic as ma...

Topological Classification of Torus Manifolds Which Have Codimension One Extended G-actions

The aim of this paper is to determine topological types of torus manifolds which have codimension one extended G-actions. As a result, we show that their topological types are completely determined by their cohomology rings and characteristic classes. Due to this result, we find the counterexample to the cohomological rigidity problem in the category of torus manifolds. Moreover, we find the cl...

Bounded rigidity of manifolds and asymptotic dimension growth

Let X be a metric space and define the category B(X) of manifolds bounded over X in the usual way [FW]. The objects of B(X) are manifolds M equipped with proper2 maps p : M → X. These maps p need not be continuous. A morphism (M1, p1) → (M2, p2) between objects of B(X) is a continuous map f : M1 →M2 which is bounded over X in the sense that there exists k > 0 for which d(p1(m), p2(f(m))) < k fo...

Rigidity of pseudo-free group actions on contractible manifolds

In this article, we announce joint work with Frank Connolly and Jim Davis [6]. This follows an earlier case study of pseudo-free involutions on the n-torus carried out in [5]. The author is grateful to the organizers of the RIMS conferences where these results were disseminated in Asia: Transformation Groups and Surgery Theory (Masayuki Yamasaki, August 2010), Transformation Groups and Combinat...

Free Circle Actions with Contractible Orbits on Symplectic Manifolds

We prove that closed symplectic four-manifolds do not admit any smooth free circle actions with contractible orbits, without assuming that the actions preserve the symplectic forms. In higher dimensions such actions by symplectomorphisms do exist, and we give explicit examples based on the constructions of [5].
